Passions off the Snow

If you can’t find Sara and Thomas on the ski trails and slopes, look for Sara steering the canoe down the Bow River while Thomas balances and fly fishes from the front. Or you might find Thomas hanging five while Sara battles the foam in their favorite surf spot in Tofino. More than likely though, Sara will be lounging in their hammock close to their solar powered cabin in the hills above Invermere, while Thomas chops wood.

Being outdoor winter athletes, both Sara and Thomas have a strong connection with the environment. This has led them to partnering with the David Suzuki Foundation in an effort to address the issues surrounding climate change, which has directly impacted their sports. They have taken action and are committed to reducing their personal consumption and have gone “carbon neutral”. Sara and Thomas have personally challenged their teammates to do the same, in hopes that Cross Country and Alpine skiing can be the first carbon neutral team to compete in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. The couple will donate half of their prize money from the World Cup circuit to help fund projects dedicated to reducing green house gas emissions.
