Sara grew up downstream from Thomas’s hometown in Banff, Alberta. It wasn’t a chance encounter on the ski slopes, local coffee shop or a sweaty nightclub but through the premonition of a good mutual friend who thought a touch of downhill speed might be a good combination with the endurance of a Nordic skier. The path to romance wasn’t exactly paved as Sara was working as a cook at her parents backcountry lodge and Thomas had to bike thirty kilometers through grizzly infested terrain for a date. Obviously, Sara was impressed with his quadzilla thighs and he, being of Italian heritage, with her skills in the kitchen.
After a few years of courtship and a crash course in cooking and cleaning for Grandi at the Renner’s mountain lodge, they moved in together contently in Canmore. The lives of ski racers competing in different sports involved winters in Europe with brief romantic interludes in random geographies. It was symbiotically beneficial in all ways and they were married a few years later, on skis and in a blizzard on Wonder Pass at Mount Assiniboine. The adventure continues as they are now expecting their first child in combination with pursuing excellence in their respective sports.
