Sara was raised in a unique setting. Her family operates Mount Assiniboine Lodge, a backcountry establishment perched on the great divide of the Rocky Mountains. The remote location made it the perfect training grounds to become a world class Nordic ski racer. Since there was no road access, as a child, Sara and her siblings would often hike or ski the thirty kilometers trail to the lodge.

Growing up in the heart of Nordic skiing in Canada and the excitement surrounding the 1988 Olympic which were held in her hometown of Canmore, as a twelve year old, Sara caught the Olympic bug. She progressed quickly on the domestic racing circuit but was pulverized on the international circuit. After a disappointing Olympics in Nagano, Sara was part of the era that saw Nordic Skiing emerge from the wool socks and backwoods and onto the front pages of Canadian Sporting history. She became the first Canadian to win a World Championship medal. In a dramatic race, that involved a broken ski pole and help from a Norwegian coach, Sara with longtime friend and teammate, Beckie Scott, won a silver medal in Torino in the sprint relay. Her goals are to be a great mother and a contender in all events in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
